Chelsea and Manchester United in Race to Sign Porto Goalkeeper Diogo Costa

Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. The Portugal international has been tipped to leave Porto this summer with United having tracked his progress over the last year. With David de Gea’s future looking increasingly uncertain, it has been reported that Erik ten Hag is eager to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer with Costa, who has a release clause of £65million, among the options under consideration.

Record report however Chelsea are also interested. While the Blues are yet to make an offer, he is on their list of options with agent Jorge Mendes in contact with the Premier League side.

Edouard Mendy Set to Leave Chelsea

Edouard Mendy, who spent most of last season as second choice goalkeeper, is among the Chelsea stars set to leave this summer with reports suggesting he is closing in on a move to Al-Ahli. Reports suggest Mauricio Pochettino views Kepa Arrizabalaga as a capable no1 but Chelsea remain linked with new options in goal. The club are thought to have ended their interest in Inter star Andre Onana, however.

Manchester United Uncertainty Over David de Gea’s Future

At United, de Gea’s contract is set to expire at the end of the month and despite talks over a new deal on reduced terms, there is no clarity on his situation. Ten Hag is repeatedly underlined his happiness with de Gea but was unable to guarantee he will be his first choice goalkeeper in an interview with The Times last month. Former United captain Gary Neville meanwhile has stressed bringing in a new no1 is just as urgent a priority as signing a striker this summer.

Conclusion

It appears that both Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in signing Diogo Costa from Porto this summer. With Edouard Mendy set to leave Chelsea and David de Gea’s future uncertain at Manchester United, it looks like both clubs are looking for new first-choice goalkeepers. It remains to be seen whether either club will make an offer for Costa, but it looks like he could be on the move this summer.
