Willian Signs New Contract with Fulham Despite Interest from Chelsea and Manchester United
Willian has signed a new one-year contract with Fulham, despite interest from Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United. The 34-year-old Brazilian winger made a surprise return to the Premier League last September when he signed a one-year contract with Fulham.
Willian went on to become one of Fulham’s standout performers in the Premier League last season, scoring five goals and registering five assists in 27 appearances. As his contract was up this summer, both Chelsea and Manchester United made enquiries about signing him on a free transfer, according to reports in Brazil.
However, negotiations were not advanced with either club as both regarded Willian as a back-up target in their summer transfer plans. The Brazilian also turned down an offer to join Nottingham Forest, who avoided relegation from the Premier League last season.
Willian expressed his happiness at signing a new deal with Fulham: “I’m completely happy. Happy to sign one more year with Fulham. Happy to continue the work that I did last season with all my teammates and the whole club. I think it’s a club that can do even better this season, so I’m happy to continue this amazing adventure.”
Willian spent seven seasons at Chelsea and helped the club win two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup and the Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge. He then left to join Arsenal on a free transfer in 2020 but spent just a season with the Gunners before returning to Brazil to sign for Corinthians.
Willian is now set to remain at Fulham for another season, where he will be looking to help the club build on their impressive Premier League campaign last season. With his experience and quality, he could be a key player for the Cottagers as they look to establish themselves as a top-flight team.
