Reports suggest that Chelsea may offer former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino the club’s head coach job on Saturday. The club’s hierarchy, which includes co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, are set to meet in Los Angeles this weekend to make a final decision on Pochettino, who is the No.1 choice for the role. Although there is not full agreement on Pochettino, he is the favourite out of three candidates, which also includes Burnley manager Vincent Kompany and a third unknown name. If the decision is unanimous, Chelsea plan to make a contractual offer to Pochettino.
The 51-year-old Argentine has been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2022, where he won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France. He is adored by Chelsea’s London rivals Spurs – guiding them to the Champions League final in 2019 – and has also managed Southampton and Espanyol. Pochettino has already identified two areas of the Chelsea squad he would like to strengthen ahead of his looming appointment, which include bringing in a new striker and a number six. He has also given Chelsea his assessment of the current squad and told the club to focus their rebuild on homegrown talent.
This season has been an abysmal one for Chelsea, who have crashed out of all the cups and are all the way down in 11th in the Premier League table. They have lost all five games since interim boss Frank Lampard replaced Graham Potter, most recently at home to Brentford on Wednesday night. If Pochettino is appointed, Lampard will offer his assistance to the Argentine.
