Chelsea Joins Arsenal in Declan Rice Transfer Race, Highly Interested in West Ham Star

Date:

Declan Rice, the West Ham captain, is a highly sought-after transfer target for Arsenal and Chelsea, with both London clubs reportedly interested in signing the midfielder this summer. Rice has made 229 appearances for West Ham after rising through the ranks at their academy and has been ever-present in David Moyes’ Premier League side this season, managing two goals and two assists.

Chelsea have had a longstanding admiration for Rice, and Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg recently took to Twitter to seemingly confirm their concrete interest. He stated that “Chelsea is definitely in the race and highly interested – confirmed! He’s one of the top candidates in order to strengthen the defensive midfield.”

Graham Potter’s Brighton side already splashed out a whopping £107million on Enzo Fernandez in January to sure up their midfield, but Arsenal are also looking to improve on their squad depth as they gear up for a likely return to the Champions League for the first time in six years.

Mikel Arteta has already strengthened his midfield with the January addition of European Championship winner Jorginho, but Arsenal are still heavily linked with attracting the England star to the Emirates Stadium despite their public interest in Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

Rice has long been touted for a move to a ‘big six’ club, but will be focused on keeping West Ham in the league until the summer. The East London side are currently in a relegation scrap and find themselves in 17th place, just two points off rock bottom. They face bottom of the table Southampton in their next game at the London Stadium.

Despite the competition from other clubs, Arsenal and Chelsea are both expected to make a strong push for Rice’s signature this summer. The 24-year-old is expected to leave The Hammers in the summer, with his current contract due to expire in 2024.

Rice’s versatility and ability to play as a defensive midfielder or centre-back make him an attractive prospect for both clubs. He has been a key player for West Ham this season, helping them to secure impressive victories over the likes of Tottenham and Leicester City.

However, with Chelsea’s recent success in the transfer market, they may have an edge over Arsenal in securing Rice’s signature. The Blues have already signed Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy in recent transfer windows, and are looking to continue their spending spree this summer.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have struggled to compete with their London rivals in recent years and will need to make significant improvements to their squad if they want to challenge for major honours again. Signing Rice would be a step in the right direction for the Gunners, but they will face stiff competition from Chelsea.

In conclusion, Declan Rice is a highly sought-after transfer target for Arsenal and Chelsea this summer. Both clubs are expected to make a strong push for his signature, but Chelsea may have an edge over Arsenal due to their recent success in the transfer market. Regardless of which club he chooses, Rice is sure to be a valuable addition to any squad and will continue to be a key player for West Ham until the end of the season.
