Chelsea Fan Confronts Newcastle United Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka During Carabao Cup Quarter-Final
Chelsea and the Metropolitan Police are currently investigating an incident where a supporter confronted Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka during their Carabao Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.
Incident Details
A Chelsea fan ran onto the pitch and barged into Dubravka after Mykhailo Mudryk scored the equalizer in injury time, which took the game to penalties.
Manager’s Response
When asked about the incident, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed his concern, stating, “We need to be careful. The fans need to be careful with this type of thing because it’s a thing that can put in danger the players. I’m disappointed. I don’t agree with this type of thing that happened here in Stamford Bridge and in other stadiums in England or around the world. It’s always disappointing with this type of thing because it’s dangerous.”
Player Safety
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe emphasized the need for greater protection for players, saying, “Definitely on the evidence of that. I always say the safety of players, coaches, managers, referees, linesmen [is] the priority at any football match. More has to be done to keep irate supporters away from everybody.”
