Reports from Portugal suggest that Chelsea have withdrawn from the race to sign Sporting midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The club had been competing with Paris Saint-Germain for the Uruguay international, but PSG improved their initial contract proposal, which Chelsea were unwilling to match. Both clubs were willing to meet the €60 million (£52.2m) buyout clause in Ugarte’s deal with Sporting, but PSG’s offer was worth around €3m (£2.5m) more per season than Chelsea’s proposal. Mauricio Pochettino had spoken to Ugarte regarding a move to Stamford Bridge, but it appears that Chelsea’s new manager will miss out on one of his midfield targets.
