Chelsea Considering New Left-Back as Dortmund Pursue Ian Maatsen
Chelsea is contemplating entering the market for a new left-back as Borussia Dortmund closes in on a move for Ian Maatsen. The Blues had accepted a bid from Burnley for Maatsen last summer after the Dutchman spent the 2022/23 season on loan with the Clarets. However, Maatsen expressed his desire to remain at Stamford Bridge and compete for a starting position.
Despite his hopes, Maatsen has only made three starts this season, with two of them coming in the Carabao Cup. In his 15 appearances across all competitions, he has mainly played on the flank rather than his preferred left-back position.
Now, Chelsea is inclined to sell Maatsen, and his status as an academy product would provide the club with more financial flexibility in the January transfer window. While Dortmund initially preferred a loan deal, negotiations between the two clubs are progressing towards an agreement on a transfer fee, and the Germans are confident of completing the deal.
With Ben Chilwell still sidelined due to injury, Chelsea will explore their options at left-back. Additionally, Marc Cucurella is also free to leave the club.
