Chelsea Football Club is reportedly considering replacing goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy this summer. The club has made contact with three potential replacements, including Andre Onana from Inter Milan, Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund, and David Raya from Brentford. Despite spending almost £100m on Arrizabalaga and Mendy, neither have proven themselves capable of being Chelsea’s long-term No. 1. Arrizabalaga was dropped after a string of errors and replaced by Mendy, who was signed on the advice of legendary Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech. While Mendy went on to win the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel, he too found himself dropped earlier this season as Arrizabalaga was reinstated as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper by Graham Potter.
Chelsea bosses remain unconvinced about both goalkeepers and are planning to bring in a new shot-stopper this summer. However, the situation is complicated by the fact that the club still does not know who will be in charge of the team next season, with Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique among the frontunners for the job. Chelsea’s reservations about Mendy and Arrizabalaga have culminated in the club pausing contract talks with the former and telling rival clubs that the latter is up for sale this summer.
Arrizabalaga produced another underwhelming performance in Chelsea’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid in midweek, but Frank Lampard confirmed that the 28-year-old will start Saturday’s Premier League match against Brighton. Lampard said that he doesn’t see any reason to do anything different at the moment, adding that Kepa’s performances and maturity have improved, while Edou has had a couple of injuries.
