Chelsea ‘close’ to beating Manchester United to Frenkie de Jong transfer, as Barcelona midfielder shows speed by beating Ousmane Dembele in race

Frenkie de Jong’s game is about control and precision, but that does not mean to say he hasn’t got speed in his locker – as Chelsea fans may be about to find out.

Reports in Spain claim the Blues are set to beat Manchester United to the signing of the Netherlands international with an agreement ‘close’ with Barcelona.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, De Jong maintains he does not want to leave the Nou Camp this summer, but it’s reported Barca are close to reaching an agreement with Chelsea over his transfer.

Man United have had a deal agreed for De Jong for weeks, and yet he has stayed put. Manager Xavi and president Joan Laporta have both publicly said they want him to stay, but there are issues with the player’s contract with Barcelona demanding he accept a cut to his wages to continue at the Catalan club.

If he refuses, it’s said Barcelona will ‘invite him to leave’ with two Premier League clubs now in the race.

In a choice between United and Chelsea, it’s widely claimed the Blues would win given they can offer Champions League football and are willing to pay top wages under new owner Todd Boehly.

And De Jong knows a thing or two about winning races, with the 25-year-old recently surprising Barcelona supporters by displaying a ridiculous burst of pace to beat teammate Ousmane Dembele in a sprint.

Ahead of Barcelona’s pre-season clash against Pumas UNAM, several stars were involved in a sprint towards the halfway line.

Midfielder De Jong was put in the same group as the Frenchman speedstar, and outran the forward.

The Dutchman turned on the after burners to ensured he beat his rapid teammate, with footage emerging on social media.

According tospeedsdsb.com,De Jong had a top speed of 31.80 km/h in last season’s Champions League and it remains to be seen what numbers he achieved against Dembele.

De Jong recently netted as Barcelona won 6-0 in the Joan Gamper Trophy clash at the Nou Camp on Sunday against the Mexican side.

The same day United were beaten 2-1 at home to Brighton, De Jong was slick with his pacing and was calm and composed, whilst bursting forward with the ball.

have asked their star to rescind his current contract -agreed under former president Josep Maria Bartomeu – and revert to his previous deal, as their financial woes continue.

The club claim they have found evidence of criminal actions on behalf of the previous board who signed his contract renewal in October 2020.

De Jong will be looking to impress further when Barcelona take on Rayo Vallecano in their LaLiga opener on Saturday at the Nou Camp.
