Mauricio Pochettino Reassured by Chelsea Hierarchy on Player Sales and Signings
Chelsea’s head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, has received reassurances from the club’s hierarchy that he does not need to sell players in order to make new signings during the January transfer window. Despite spending over £1 billion on players in the past three transfer windows and generating significant revenue from sales, Chelsea must still adhere to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
Pochettino revealed that he had discussions with the club’s owners and co-sporting directors regarding their transfer business, and he is not under pressure to raise funds before making further acquisitions. He stated, “No, it’s not like this. It’s not what they tell me, that it is necessary we have to sell to buy some players. The conversations were really good, really nice. We have a good relationship. Everything is going well. They are normal conversations we need to have.”
In addition, Pochettino mentioned that Chelsea may not pursue another center forward despite Nicolas Jackson being away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Christopher Nkunku facing injury problems after already missing four months due to a knee complaint. When asked about the importance of recruiting another forward, Pochettino replied, “No. We are assessing the squad like always. We are looking at the team, the options, for opportunities. But I am so happy because we have (Armando) Broja, different players like (Cole) Palmer that can play in the striker position. We need our second line offensive players to score and to help win the games. I am very positive. I am happy with the squad and if something appears, we will announce. At the moment we are assessing.”
Overall, Pochettino is satisfied with the current state of Chelsea’s squad and remains optimistic about their prospects. The club will only make further announcements if necessary, as they continue to evaluate their options.
