Chelsea branded ‘boring’ after ‘robbing’ win over West Ham and Marc Cucurella transfer criticised again as Ben Chilwell brings Blues to life

Chelsea have been branded boring after ‘scraping’ a win against West Ham and told they must finish in the top two after their huge summer spending.

The Blues, with help from a controversial VAR decision to disallow a Maxwel Cornet goal, beat the Hammers 2-1.

Chelsea, under new owner Todd Boehly, spent big in the transfer market, signing Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Wesley Fofana, among others.

But the Blues have had a mixed start to the new Premier Legaue season and looked off the pace for much of their clash with the Hammers.

Ben Chilwell replacing £60million summer signing Marc Cucurella at left wing-back was a catalyst for Thomas Tuchel’s and he grabbed a goal and an assist in the win.

But former Premier League star Gabby Agbonlahor believes that, given the money spent by Chelsea, they should be performing at a much higher level.

He said: “Chelsea have spent this summer a record for the Premier League, £260m. They have to finish in the top two, for me. Top four is not enough.

“Chelsea have to finish in the top two, £260m this window and they are scraping past, with the help of VAR, robbing [West Ham].

GameDay Phone In co-host Jamie O’Hara queried that view, branding Thomas Tuchel a ‘class act’ but Agbonlahor looked flabbergasted.

He replied: “With the money he’s spent you think he’s doing well at Chelsea?

“I don’t like watching them play football, it’s boring. Today was boring. The first half, boring. Boring Chelsea..

“Last season I was saying it and Chelsea fans agreed midweek. Watching them at the moment is boring football.

“The five at the back, when you watch them, it’s not working. Today they put Chilwell on for Cucurella and Chilwell was flying foward, scoring goals and gets an assist.

“Cucurella, I’m not having him. I don’t understand it, £60m. He’s not good technically, very erratic, silly fouls. Spend that money [elsewhere]. Like [Danny Murphy] said in midweek – put that money towards Declan Rice.”
