Tottenham Eye £50m Move for Chelsea Midfielder Conor Gallagher
Chelsea have placed a £50m price tag on midfielder Conor Gallagher following interest from Tottenham. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has identified the England international as a potential replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is attracting attention from Atletico Madrid.
Gallagher made 35 Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season, 17 of which were as a substitute. The tenacious midfielder was recalled to Stamford Bridge after an impressive loan spell with Crystal Palace in the 2021/22 season. His high energy levels are likely to appeal to Mauricio Pochettino, but Chelsea are keen to recoup funds following a £600m outlay over the last 12 months.
Tottenham are keen to capitalise on this, with the Telegraph reporting that Gallagher is a key target for Postecoglou. However, the report also states that Chelsea will seek around £50m for the midfielder due to his status as an England international and homegrown player. This is a figure that Spurs are unlikely to be willing to pay, particularly as they have already strengthened their midfield with the £40m purchase of James Maddison.
Chelsea have already shown a willingness to deal with Premier League rivals this summer, having sanctioned the departures of Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount to Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United respectively. Whether they will be willing to do the same with Gallagher remains to be seen.
For Tottenham, the move would represent a significant outlay and could prove to be a risky one given Gallagher’s lack of experience at the highest level. However, if Postecoglou can get the best out of the 22-year-old, it could prove to be a shrewd investment.
It remains to be seen whether Spurs will make their move for Gallagher, but it is clear that Chelsea are looking for a fee in excess of £50m for the England international. With Tottenham already having strengthened their midfield, it remains to be seen whether they are willing to pay such a high price for Gallagher.
