Chelsea and Manchester United consider Benjamin Pavard move but face competition

Manchester United and Chelsea are both considering a move for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard, although the likes of Juventus and Atletico Madrid are also interested.

The 26-year-old is reportedly keen for a new opportunity away from Bayern, partly as he wishes to play at centre-back and has instead been picked regularly at right-back for the Germans.

Pavard played 36 games in all competitions last season, but with the arrivals of right-back Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax and centre-back Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus have raised the possibility that he will have fewer chances in both positions.

French publication L’Equipe report that the quartet of United, Chelsea, Juventus and Atletico are all interested in taking advantage of the situation, but the Premier League clubs may have disadvantages in the pursuit.

The Blues have already brought in centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly and continue to pursue long-term target Jules Kounde, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Presnal Kimpembe is also ahead of Pavard on their wish list.

Manchester United have already agreed a deal with Ajax for Lisandro Martinez, meaning they now have the Argentinian along with Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof as centre-back options.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag may be keen to add Pavard to his possibilities at right-back, but that is not where the Frenchman wants to play.

The World Cup winner still has two years left on his contract at Bayern and the club are in no rush to sell the versatile defender, so it would take a substantial offer to tempt the German champions into making a deal.
