Chelsea will battle Liverpool to sign Portugal international Matheus Nunes from Wolves in the summer, according to reports.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were believed to be close to signing Nunes last summer before he headed to Molineux in a £38m deal from Sporting Lisbon.

Nunes has been at Wolves less than a season but could leave after just one campaign at the club and has admirers at both Stamford Bridge and Anfield.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who has 11 caps for Portugal and featured at the World Cup in Qatar, arrived at Wolves for a club-record fee and has made 17 Premier League appearances so far this term.

He is under contract until 2027 and according to The Telegraph, Nunes would cost around £44m.

Chelsea have spent serious money since owner Todd Boehly replaced Roman Abramovich in the summer – with the American splurging £468.6m on transfers.

The Blues, currently 10th in the Premier League and 10 points off the top four, have already signed six players in the current January transfer window.

They purchased Noni Madueke in a £35m deal from PSV and signed Mykhailo Mudryk for £88.5m after a bidding war with Arsenal.

Benoit Badiashile arrived for £35m while David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos were signed for undisclosed fees and Joao Felix came in on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool, meanwhile, who are ninth in the table and are also 10 points off the top four, have made just one January signing – bringing in Cody Gakpo from PSV for £45m.

Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked with a move for Brighton star Moises Caicedo too – and face competition from Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Caicedo, though, claims he is only focussed on Brighton and the Seagulls are keen to keep hold of him unless they receive an astronomical offer from a rival club.
