Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku that will see him return on a season-long loan.
The striker left Inter for a second spell at Stamford Bridge in the summer for £97.5m but scored just eight Premier League goals and made just 16 league starts in the league.
Lukaku made a satisfactory start to life in England, however, his Blues career took a sudden downward turn following an explosive interview in December 2021 where he explained he wasn’t happy at Chelsea and revealed his hopes to return to the San Siro.
Inter, who Lukaku won the league with in 2021, will pay an €8million (£6.8m) loan fee plus add-ons, while he will reportedly take home an €8m salary.
However, the club have no buy option or an obligation to buy him in the contract.
But talkSPORT’s Danny Mills believes a separate permanent deal could be done between the two clubs in a year’s time anyway.
“I think it was needed for all clubs and clearly it hasn’t worked out,” he told Kick Off.
“It happens from time to time. Players move for big money and it doesn’t work out for whatever reason.

“The money’s consequential to Chelsea owners, they can write that off, that’s not a huge problem. They’re probably going to get £10million in terms of his loan, Inter Milan are probably going to play the majority of his wages so he’s off the wage bill.
“What’s the option? Keep him there, keep him on the bench where he’s disruptive and unhappy or they use that money that’s going to work and be part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
“We all thought Romelu Lukaku was going to be a success but for whatever reason it hasn’t worked. Maybe the Premier League’s too much for him. It didn’t work for him at Manchester United, he didn’t look sharp, changed that when he went to Inter Milan and then he came back to Chelsea and didn’t look sharp yet again.
“Sometimes as a business you just have to cut your losses. If he plays really well and does fantastically for Inter Milan and they win the league and get in the Champions League and are challenging then they’re no doubt going to come in for him.
“If Chelsea turn round and say ‘give us £60m for him’, plus getting £10m this season, for one season they’ve maybe lost just under £20m. It’s not a huge dent.
“That’s how the Chelsea owners will be looking at it.”
Lukaku joined Inter for the first time in 2019 from Manchester United and scored 64 goals in two seasons, helping Antonio Conte’s side end Juventus’ domination.
