Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes Dominate ESPYS Awards
The Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off their Super Bowl victory, continued their winning streak at the 30th ESPYS on Wednesday night. The team took home the award for Best Team, while their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was honored as Best Athlete, Men’s Sports and Best NFL Player.
Mahomes, who has already won two Super Bowls in his five-year career, expressed his gratitude for his teammates and coaches during his acceptance speech. He also hinted at the team’s determination to continue their success in the upcoming season.
Skier Mikaela Shiffrin was recognized as the Best Athlete, Women’s Sports. Shiffrin broke the record for the most World Cup wins by any skier, solidifying her status as one of the greatest in her sport. She emphasized the importance of setting a positive example for future generations and inspiring them to achieve greatness.
The ESPYS also celebrated other champions from the past year and raised awareness and funds for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The Denver Nuggets, who won their first NBA title, saw Nikola Jokic named Best NBA Player and Jamal Murray named Best Comeback Athlete. A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces was honored as Best WNBA Player, while Angel Reese of the LSU Tigers was named Best Breakthrough Athlete.
Lionel Messi, who won his first World Cup with Argentina, received the award for Best Championship Performance. The soccer superstar was also named Best Soccer Player.
The ESPYS also recognized individuals who have shown exceptional courage and perseverance. Chicago White Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks, a cancer survivor, received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Hendriks shared his journey of battling Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma while continuing to play baseball. He emphasized the power of the mind and the importance of believing in oneself.
The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage was presented to the United States women’s national soccer team for their ongoing pursuit of equal pay. The team sued U.S. Soccer in 2019 and successfully negotiated new collective bargaining agreements that provide equal pay for international competition. The team has used their platform to raise awareness about pay inequity and social injustices in the U.S.
The Pat Tillman Award for Service was given to the Buffalo Bills athletic training staff for their lifesaving actions when player Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during a game. The staff’s quick response, including performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator, saved Hamlin’s life. The emotional moment on stage highlighted the importance of CPR training and access to defibrillators in saving lives.
The ESPYS also honored individuals who have made significant contributions off the field. Jrue and Lauren Holiday received the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award for their philanthropic work, while Jordan Adeyemi, Ashley Badis, and Rishan Patel were recognized with the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award.
In addition to the team and individual awards, the ESPYS recognized outstanding performances in various sports. LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers was honored for his record-breaking performance, while Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings won Best Play for his incredible one-handed catch. Other winners included Caleb Williams (Best College Athlete, Men’s Sports), Caitlin Clark (Best College Athlete, Women’s Sports), Zach Miller (Best Athlete with a Disability), Shohei Ohtani (Best MLB Player), Connor McDavid (Best NHL Player), Max Verstappen (Best Driver), Jon Jones (Best UFC Fighter), Claressa Shields (Best Boxer), Scottie Scheffler (Best Golfer), and Novak Djokovic (Best Tennis Player).
The 30th ESPYS was a night of celebration and recognition for the incredible achievements and inspiring stories of athletes from various sports. It highlighted the power of sports to unite, inspire, and make a positive impact on society.
