Cesc Fabregas Takes Interim Charge of Serie B Side Como
Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has taken on his first senior football management role as the interim coach of Serie B side Como.
The Spaniard, who finished his playing career with the Italian club, has been working as a coach for their under-19 team since retiring last summer.
Stepping into the Interim Post
Following the sacking of former head coach Moreno Longo, Fabregas has stepped into the interim post at Como.
Despite the team’s recent 1-0 victory against Ascoli, Como currently sits in sixth place, eight points behind league leaders Parma.
While Fabregas is also a part-owner of the club alongside Thierry Henry, it is unlikely that he will hold onto the position on a full-time basis. The club has stated that their focus is on finding a new head coach.
Club Statement and Future Plans
Speaking about the change in coaching staff, Mirwan Suwarso, the official representative of the ownership group, said, “We thank Moreno Longo for all his hard work and dedication, especially after coming in following a difficult period last season. However, we would like to embark on a new path that hopefully will provide more excitement and entertainment for the fans in Como and beyond.”
“We hope to make a new appointment for the head coach position in the near future,” added Suwarso. “We thank the fans for understanding and their unwavering loyalty and support. As always, Forza Como.”
Fabregas’ Career and First Game in Charge
Fabregas joined Como in 2022 after playing four seasons in France with Ligue 1 side Monaco. The 36-year-old had a distinguished career with Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea, winning the World Cup, European Championships, and Premier League, among other titles.
His first game in charge as interim coach will be against bottom-placed Feralpisalo next weekend.
