The 2022-23 Premiership season came to a thrilling conclusion on Saturday afternoon at a raucous Celtic Park. Despite the absence of away fans, the atmosphere was electric as Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota scored the goals that secured the title for Celtic. Rangers gave it their all, with James Tavernier scoring his 99th and 100th goals for the club, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Celtic from claiming back-to-back titles.
Kyogo has been an extraordinary signing for Celtic, and his two goals in this game were the foundations upon which their 12-point lead was built. His 27th and 28th goals of the season were a testament to his speed of thought and ruthless execution. He has become an immortal for the fans, with his trickery and goals providing pure entertainment.
Rangers were resilient throughout the game, with Alfredo Morelos having a goal ruled out for a push on Alistair Johnston. They had chances to equalise, but Celtic’s strength in adversity saw them through. Todd Cantwell fired one over when he should have done better, and John Souttar’s blunder allowed Jota to score the third goal.
Ange Postecoglou spoke of Kyogo’s kind nature and smiling demeanour, but also of his competitiveness. Rangers people must long for the day when they see the back of him, but that day will be a long way off. As he celebrated in the aftermath, Kyogo looked like a man in paradise. He has been an incredible signing for Celtic, and his contribution to their success will not be forgotten.
