Scott Carson has managed to equal Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta’s record for the longest gap between first and last Champions League wins as a player as Manchester City lift the trophy in Istanbul. The goalkeeper was on the bench when Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties in Turkey in 2005 and was an unused substitute again on Saturday night as City downed Inter Milan 1-0 in the very same stadium. The 37-year-old, incredibly, now has two Champions League winner’s medals in his collection, despite only ever playing four matches in the competition. AC Milan legends Maldini and Costacurta had set the record at 18 years when they first won the European Cup in 1989 and lifted the Champions League trophy in 2007. Carson has been at Manchester City since 2019 but has only made two first team appearances in the last four years, one in the Premier League and one more in the Champions League. He was on the pitch at the Ataturk Stadium on Saturday night, celebrating with the likes of Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and match-winner Rodri. Rodri scored the only goal of the match 68 minutes into the match, allowing Manchester City to secure their first ever Champions League title and an historic treble. Ederson was called upon to make some crucial saves as Inter pushed for an equaliser, but City held on for their victory. Jack Grealish was seen in tears during an emotional interview after the match, whilst Rodri himself admitted he had ‘played s***’ despite his crucial goal.
