Callum Davidson has mutually decided to step down from his role as St Johnstone manager, as the Scottish Premiership club are currently facing a relegation battle. The McDiarmid Park side have only won twice in the past 20 games, leaving them four points away from the play-off place.
Davidson, a former player of St Johnstone, became an icon of the club after leading them to a Scottish Cup and League Cup double in 2020-21. Despite this success, his team have been struggling this season and chairman Steve Brown released a statement confirming that assistant manager Steven MacLean will take over on a temporary basis. Brown said: “Callum has been a brilliant manager for St Johnstone and led us to that cup double in 2021 and then European football. But we feel results haven’t been good enough in recent weeks and it’s best for the football club to make a change at this stage. He is a St Johnstone legend and always will be.”
Davidson took over from Tommy Wright in June 2020, who had previously led the club to their most successful period in history. However, Davidson surpassed this success in his first season, leading the team to two victories at Hampden. Despite this, the team have been struggling since then, with last season ending in a play-off win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Now, with six games left, St Johnstone are five points away from the bottom of the table.
