Flames GM Craig Conroy is preparing for his second NHL Draft with the team, and all eyes are on the Flames’ choice at No. 9. There is speculation that they may select Tij Iginla, son of Flames legend Jarome Iginla. While the elder Iginla has previously removed himself from discussions about his son, he stayed in the room during draft-week meetings when Tij was mentioned. Conroy believes that Tij could handle the pressure that comes with being the son of an NHL legend. However, if the Flames choose not to draft Tij, they will have to be prepared for backlash and questions from fans. Conroy jokingly said that fans can blame Flames director of amateur scouting Tod Button in that case.
The Flames are open to taking the best player available at No. 9, regardless of position. Players like Berkly Catton and Konsta Helenius are potential options that could help strengthen the team at center. However, Corey Pronman’s mock draft has the Flames selecting defenseman Sam Dickinson at No. 9, with Tij Iginla going to the New Jersey Devils at No. 10.
Conroy is open to the possibility of trading up in the draft or using their draft capital to acquire a young player. Unlike last year’s draft, there have already been trades involving picks in the first round, indicating that there may be more movement this year. The Flames currently have picks at No. 9 and No. 28, with Conroy expressing interest in moving up from the latter pick if they find a player they really like.
After the draft, the Flames will shift their focus to free agency. Conroy is looking for high-quality individuals on shorter deals to provide support to their younger players while they continue to develop. Defense and goalie are two positions where they are looking to add reinforcements. They specifically need help on the right side of the defense, and potential free agents like Tyson Barrie, Matt Dumba, and Shayne Gostisbehere could be of interest to the Flames. In terms of goaltending, they hope to bring in a goalie who can compete in camp with Dan Vladar and Dustin Wolf.
Regarding pending UFA Oliver Kylington, the Flames are still in discussions with his representation about a contract. Both sides are working to find the right terms for him to stay with the team.
