Cafu, Samuel Eto’o and Tim Cahill all surprisingly predict Qatar will knock England out of the World Cup – do eerily similar predictions suggest the Three Lions are in for a huge shock?

World Cup ambassadors Samuel Eto’o, Cafu and Tim Cahill have all made surprise predictions for Qatar to knock England out of the tournament.

All footballing greats in their own right, the trio are ‘legacy ambassadors’ for the 2022 tournament, and have supreme knowledge of the game from iconic careers.

And all three are tipping the Three Lions to exit this year’s tournament at the last 16 stage thanks to host nation Qatar.

The ‘Road to 2022’ Twitter account posted each of the stars’ World Cup predictions, with two-time winner and Brazil legend Cafu picking his native country to beat France in the final, but before that England will lose to Qatar.

Australian great Cahill has Brazil beating Belgium in the final, but also Qatar taking out England, while two-time European treble-winner Samuel Eto’o went very rogue.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan superstar backed his home country Cameroon to beat Morocco in the final, but despite the randomness of his draw, he still had Qatar sending England crashing out at the same stage.

Qatar have made their first ever World Cup courtesy of being hosts, and enter as the third lowest ranked side.

Of the 32 teams in Doha, only Saudi Arabia and Ghana have a lower FIFA ranking than Qatar’s 50th place, but that hasn’t stopped three of the game’s greats backing them for an extraordinary upset.

Should England qualify from Group B alongside one of Wales, Iran or the United States, they will face one of Group A’s Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal or Netherlands.

Cafu, Eto’o and Cahill have all backed Gareth Southgate’s men to top their group, meaning they would face the second-placed team in Group A, who they all selected as Qatar.

The host nation will then knock out a team ranked 45 places higher than them, before losing to world No.4 France in the quarter-finals.

Cahill, though, does offer some support to England, picking Harry Kane for the Golden Boot, meaning the Tottenham striker would have to stage a very productive four games before heading home.

There wasn’t much positivity elsewhere either, with fellow ambassadors Ronald de Boer and Ali Al-Habsi both picking England to beat Senegal in the last 16, before heading home against France in the quarters.

Prior to the tournament starting, Cahill told talkSPORT: “The team is in good shape, three players in every position, it is after the group stages when they will be tested.

“If you let the reins off and let them be free, I think you will see an incredible England team. There is goals.

“When you look at the team, structurally it is about winning games but to win games you need to let these players express themselves.”
