Burnley have sealed their return to the Premier League after victory over Middlesbrough on Friday night.

Vincent Kompany’s side will be back in English football’s top flight next season after their 2-1 win at the Riverside Stadium, sealing promotion with seven games to spare.

Ashley Barnes scored his 50th league goal for the club after 12 minutes, latching onto Josh Brownhill’s cross to fire home.

After Chuba Akpom levelled for the hosts from the penalty spot at the start of the second-half, Connor Roberts snatched back the lead after 66 minutes after being picked out by Nathan Tella.

The Clarets are on course to return to the Premier League as Championship winners, sat nine points clear of second place Sheffield United who they play on Monday.

Burnley were relegated on the final day of the season last May following a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United, dropping out of the top flight for the first time since 2015.

Having parted ways with long-serving manager Sean Dyche eight games earlier, the club turned to Manchester City legend Kompany, who was appointed manager last June.

The former Belgium international retired in August 2020, returning to his homeland to manage Anderlecht after ending his playing career where he began his managerial career before Burnley came calling.

Under his management, Burnley have enjoyed an incredible season, losing just two league games this season.
