Bukayo Saka should leave Arsenal to sign for Liverpool and would be a ‘perfect’ fit for Jurgen Klopp’s side, according to former Reds right-back Glen Johnson.

The 20-year-old England international was one of Mikel Arteta’s standout performers last season with 11 goals and seven assists in the Premier League and has been named Arsenal’s Player of the Season for the last two campaigns.

But Arsenal have failed to qualify for the top four since 2015-16 and star winger Saka – who made his debut in 2018 and won the FA Cup in 2019-20 – has been linked with a step up to a side who can regularly challenge for titles.

Premier League champions Manchester City are thought to view Saka as their ‘dream replacement’ for Raheem Sterling, who departed for Chelsea this summer.

Arsenal are said to have offered Saka a significant pay rise to prevent him from joining Pep Guardiola’s side, but he is yet to respond to the north London club.

Saka, who helped England reach the Euro 2020 final last summer, has two years remaining on his current Arsenal contract but Johnson feels he should move on and join his former club Liverpool rather than move to the Etihad.

‘I’d like to see Bukayo Saka go to Liverpool,’ Johnson told The Games Cabin. ‘He’d suit Liverpool perfectly.

‘But he’s playing well for Arsenal, and he clearly enjoys being there. He’s obviously a good lad, and you can see that from the way he interacts with other players.

‘He’s still super young so maybe a few more years at Arsenal would work too. As long as he continues to stamp his authority there, then the big teams are still going to want to sign him.’

Saka, who progressed through Arsenal’s youth academy, has made 131 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 23 goals.

Arsenal, who finished fifth last term, host Liverpool in the Premier League on October 8 with the reverse fixture at Anfield on April 8.
