Bruno Fernandes reckons he has an easy task ahead of him this season at Manchester United, as all he ever wants to do is beat his goal tally from the previous campaign.
The Portuguese star burst onto the scene at Old Trafford when he arrived in January 2020, scoring 12 goals by the end of that season, then continued his fine form over 2020/21, netting 28 goals in all competitions.
However, like most of his teammates, he had a disappointing campaign last time around, scoring just 10 Premier League goals and none in any other competitions.
The 27-year-old says it was difficult to individually shine when the team were struggling so much, but he expects it to be much easier this season and that he should comfortably improve his personal figures.
‘It was tough for everyone to be successful individually because the results were not there,’ Fernandes told Sky Sports.
‘For me as soon as the team will be on point and doing the results that I want, that will make me happy and make my game be much better.
‘Obviously I know that everyone is expecting so much from me because my first half a season was amazing.
‘Last season I scored only 10 goals and 13 assists, obviously I know I can do much better than that and I want to do because my main point in everything is doing better than the previous one.
‘Obviously this season I have an easy one probably, or easier than before, because 28 goals in the previous season and 10 now, so I have to go for 11, so it’s easier to beat than 28.
‘But I’m happy with what I’m doing for the club and the club is happy with what is going on with me. The new contract shows that the club trusts and respects me and it’s time for me to repay that.’
Manchester United continue their pre-season preparations with friendlies to come against Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano before the Premier League opener against Brighton on 7 August.
