Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho all smiles this time as ‘Beckham-esque’ Manchester United wonderkid hailed for Aston Villa display

Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes were all smiles as Manchester United put on an attacking show in their win over Aston Villa.

The Argentine wonderkid came off the bench for Manchester United in the Carabao Cup clash and put in a stunning display, rounding it off as he provided a brilliant assist Scott McTominay late on to seal a 4-2 victory and a spot in the fourth round of the competition.

Fernandes had criticised the 18-year-old last week, suggesting that Garnacho’s attitude had left much to be desired during the early months of the season, but the pair were all smiles as they made their way off the pitch after the match.

Garnacho’s assist for McTominay’s goal was a real moment of quality at Old Trafford as he whipped a perfect ball into the box.

talkSPORT’s Micky Gray couldn’t believe what he’d seen from the starlet either, saying the delivery was like watching Man United legend David Beckham.

Gray said on commentary for talkSPORT: “Erik ten Hag put him on the biggest stage and he’s come up with the good after coming off the bench.

“All of his teammate going up to him, patting him on the back and giving him a hug. What a ball into the box, it was like it was in slow-motion going into the area.”

Gray added: “It’s outstanding, it doesn’t get better than that. It’s Beckham-esque, albeit from the other side of the pitch.”

Clearly the star of the show, Hugh Woozencroft even predicted that Garnacho could be the next name to wear United’s famous no.7 jersey.

Speaking at the full-time whistle on talkSPORT, he said: “These terraces have been off their seats before for the likes of George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo; Alejandro Garnacho is the new name. He might be wearing the no.7 in a couple of seasons.

“What an introduction. Skill, quality and that assist for the final goal. Unbelievable.”

Gray added: “He’s a wonderkid, there’s no question in my mind.

“I’ve seen him play a number of times, I’ve seen him at Old Trafford in the Youth Cup final against Nottingham Forest – he didn’t have a great first half but popped up with a couple of goals and I was praying that he was going to get his chance this season in a Manchester United shirt and he’s been given that chance.

“He’s going to have bad times, there’s no doubt about it, he’s a young man.

“What a performance he’s put in. He’s covered every blade of grass down that left side, he had chances himself and what a ball he put in for McTominay.

“I’m so happy for the young man, I really am.”
