WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – The Cleveland Browns’ final practice at the Greenbrier resort took a turn for the worse when a skirmish broke out between the offense and defense, resulting in an injury to offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr.
Coach Kevin Stefanski provided no immediate update on Wheatley’s injury. Following the altercation, Stefanski ended practice early and had the players run sprints while Wheatley was escorted to the locker room by the training staff.
The intensity of Cleveland’s practice escalated when defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and right tackle James Hudson engaged in a physical altercation. Okoronkwo slapped Hudson’s face mask and quickly retreated, prompting Hudson to chase him down and deliver a punch to his helmet. This initial fight set the stage for the subsequent altercation that led to Wheatley’s injury.
“Fighting, skirmishes, jawing happens in every training camp at every level of football,” Stefanski commented after the incident. “They’re tired, they’re hot, they’ve been going against each other, so I’m not surprised at that at all. They talked about it. It’s over. We don’t throw punches, so I’ll review that stuff, and there’s obviously penalties.”
Stefanski emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline during practice, as engaging in physical altercations can result in ejections during games. The team will address the issue and take appropriate measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Tyrone Wheatley Jr., 26, joined the Browns earlier this year after spending time on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad. He is the son of former Michigan standout and NFL running back Tyrone Wheatley. Wheatley Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps, playing college football at Michigan, Stony Brook, and eventually Morgan State, where his father served as the head coach.
The Browns have one remaining practice this week, scheduled for Tuesday in Berea, Ohio, before their highly anticipated Hall of Fame Game against the New York Jets on Thursday night.
