More than two months after Bronny James, son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, suffered cardiac arrest while practicing at USC, he is “doing extremely well,” LeBron said at Lakers media day Monday.
Bronny went into cardiac arrest on July 24 and was taken to the nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he arrived fully conscious, neurologically intact, and stable. He was discharged the following night. After testing, Bronny’s cardiac arrest was found to be caused by a congenital heart defect, which “can and will be treated,” a James family spokesperson said on Aug. 25.
“(Bronny) began his rehab process to get back on the floor this season with his teammates and USC…” LeBron said. “It’s definitely a whirlwind and a lot of emotions for our family this summer. But the best thing we have is each other. And we stuck behind each other and gave Bronny strength throughout the whole process, and we’re happy to see where he is today and we look forward to seeing what his future still has in store for him.”
Bronny is a freshman on the USC basketball team. He missed the Trojans’ first preseason practice on Sept. 26, but coach Andy Enfield also said Bronny is “doing well.”
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard averaged 13.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists as a senior at Sierra Canyon High in Chatsworth, Calif. Bronny was a 2023 McDonald’s All-American and scored 15 points in the McDonald’s All-American game.
While Bronny works to resume playing, LeBron said he is dedicating the 2023-24 NBA season — to which he said “I don’t know” when asked if it will be his last — to his son.
“No matter what’s going on in your life at that point in time, the only thing that matters is your family,” LeBron said. “So to see what (Bronny) had to go through or what he’s been through over the last few months, it’s been a lot. I can only imagine how it’s been for him because it’s been a lot for me, it’s been a lot for our family. But the man above has definitely given us a lot of strength and has given Bronny the strength to bounce back. And if he was to walk through the door right now, you wouldn’t even know that he had what he had because of how well he’s moving, how vibrant he is. It’s just a beautiful thing to be able to have him where he is today.”
