Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton issues Bobby Madden apology after ex-Rangers star is sent off against Fleetwood Town during rivalry renewal with Celtic legend Scott Brown

Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton has issued a bizarre apology afer being sent off against Fleetwood Town by referee Bobby Madden.

But it appeared to be a thinly-veiled swipe after coming up against former Old Firm midfield rival Scott Brown in League One.

Barton received a red card in the 89th minute of the game on Saturday with his side leading 2-1, only to see ex-Celtic captain Brown’s side grab a leveller nine minutes into added time.

The result leaves The Gas 17th in the table, one point and one place behind the Cod Army.

After the game, on both Twitter and Instagram, Barton issued an apology for his touchline behaviour that led to his dismissal.

He posted: “Regardless of how much you disagree with an official’s decision making, you shouldn’t swear at them. For that I apologise to yesterday’s match official, Robert Madden.”

But the image accompanying the words was the most intriguing feature, given Barton had previously clashed with Brown in the Scottish Premiership when he played for Rangers.

He presented a screenshot of Mr Madden’s Wikipedia page which shows the official is Scottish and previous worked in the Scottish Premiership.

Willie Collum officiated the only time Rangers and Celtic met, which saw Brown’s side claim a 5-1 win at Celtic Park.

Madden spent 20 years working for the Scotland Football Association before a switch to England.
