Brentford have pulled off a significant signing by acquiring defender Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool in a deal worth up to £25m. The 22-year-old Dutchman has agreed to a five-year contract with the Bees, rejecting offers from other clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, the reigning German champions.
The transfer fee consists of an initial £20m payment, with an additional £5m in add-ons. Liverpool has also secured a 17.5% sell-on clause. Bees manager Thomas Frank expressed his delight with the signing, describing van den Berg as a “great addition” to the team. Frank highlighted the defender’s potential for further development and emphasized how well he aligns with Brentford’s playing style.
According to Frank, van den Berg possesses the key attributes required for a center-back, including speed, good game reading abilities, and composure on the ball during both build-up and decisive defensive actions. The manager also praised the player’s character, expressing confidence in his ability to integrate smoothly into the team and contribute to their progress.
Van den Berg gained valuable experience during his loan spell at German club Mainz last season, making 33 appearances in the Bundesliga. Despite joining Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in 2019, the defender had limited opportunities with the Reds, featuring in only four senior matches. He also spent 18 months on loan at Preston North End.
In addition to the signing of van den Berg, Brentford is also close to securing the services of Brazilian winger Gustavo Nunes from Gremio. The 18-year-old prospect is expected to join the Bees in another promising move for the Premier League club.
Overall, Brentford’s acquisition of Sepp van den Berg represents a significant coup for the club. With his potential for growth, technical abilities, and fitting into the team’s playing style, the Dutch defender could prove to be an instrumental figure in Brentford’s future endeavors.
