Jude Bellingham and Borussia Dortmund suffered a heartbreaking loss in their bid for the Bundesliga title, as they failed to beat Mainz on the final day of the season. The team needed a win to secure their first title in 11 years but succumbed to the pressure at the Westfalenstadion. Despite being two points ahead of Bayern Munich heading into the final match day, Dortmund could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to ninth-place Mainz, while Bayern Munich scored a late goal to beat Koln 2-1.
The day started poorly for Dortmund when Kingsley Coman put Bayern 1-0 up early on, and things went from bad to worse when Andreas Hanche-Olsen scored for Mainz due to some poor defending. Dortmund were then given a penalty, but made the bizarre decision to give it to Sebastien Haller, who had not taken one for the side before. Haller’s effort was saved, and five minutes later, Karim Onisiwo made it two for Mainz.
Bellingham, who was injured and unable to play, could only watch from the bench as Dortmund crumbled without him. Despite Raphael Guerreiro pulling one back and Koln equalising against Bayern, Jamal Musiala struck in the 89th minute to ensure an 11th straight title for Bayern. Niklas Sule’s last-minute equaliser for Dortmund was only a consolation. Bellingham and his teammates were left devastated at full-time after yet another collapse by BVB.
