BELGIUM somehow edged past a brilliant Canada 1-0 despite a poor performance from Roberto Martinez’s men.
Underdogs Canada were given a golden opportunity to go in front after just 10 minutes when the ball struck Yannick Carrasco on the arm and a VAR review led to a penalty being given.
Alphonso Davies stepped up to take but struck it poorly and was thwarted by Thibaut Courtois in the Belgium goal.
Canada dominated the first half and should have gone into the break in front, but instead they ended up behind.
In Belgium’s only chance of the 45 minutes, Toby Alderweireld pumped a long ball forward and Michy Batshuayi met it brilliantly to sweep home.
John Herdman’s men were much the better side in the second period too, but still failed to produce the finishing touch.
And Belgium held on to clinch all three points – albeit with a dismal display.
More to follow.
