The Chicago Bears have made a significant move to bolster their linebacker corps by claiming Mykal Walker off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. The team announced the acquisition on Monday, adding depth to their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Walker, who started 12 games for the Atlanta Falcons last season, was unexpectedly waived by the team on Sunday. Despite this surprising move, Walker’s performance in the previous season showcased his potential and abilities on the field. He recorded a career-high 107 tackles, with 4 tackles for loss, his first career sack, and 2 interceptions. This breakout season marked his transition from a rotational player to a full-time starter.
The Bears, currently holding the top position in the waiver order, have been active in claiming players this month. Walker’s addition will provide much-needed depth to the linebacker position, especially considering the undisclosed injuries that have sidelined several Bears linebackers during training camp.
One of the key concerns for the Bears is the health of their marquee free agent signing, Tremaine Edmunds. Edmunds has not practiced since August 2, but coach Matt Eberflus has expressed confidence in his availability for Week 1. Eberflus has classified Edmunds’ absence as day-to-day and has assured fans that there is no jeopardy to his availability for the start of the regular season.
In addition to Edmunds, backup linebackers Dylan Cole and DeMarquis Gates also missed Monday’s practice due to undisclosed injuries. The acquisition of Mykal Walker will provide insurance and support in case any of these linebackers face extended absences.
Walker’s tenure with the Atlanta Falcons spanned 49 games, with 20 starts, 3 interceptions, and a sack. As a fourth-round pick out of Fresno State, he had steadily developed into a reliable player for the Falcons. However, with his contract year approaching, the Falcons made the surprising decision to waive him, allowing the Bears to swoop in and secure his services.
During the Falcons’ preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins, Walker showcased his skills by playing 24 snaps and recording four tackles. It is worth noting that the majority of Atlanta’s starters did not participate in this game, but Walker’s performance demonstrated his readiness for the upcoming season.
At 25 years old, Walker is entering the final year of his rookie contract. This season will be crucial for him to prove his worth and secure a long-term deal in the NFL. The Bears, known for their strong defensive units, present an excellent opportunity for Walker to continue his development and make a significant impact on the field.
In a corresponding move, the Bears waived linebacker Kuony Deng to make room for Walker on the roster. Deng’s departure signifies the team’s commitment to improving their linebacker group and their confidence in Walker’s abilities.
The addition of Mykal Walker to the Chicago Bears’ roster brings depth and talent to their linebacker corps. With several linebackers dealing with injuries, Walker’s arrival provides much-needed support and ensures that the team has quality options at this crucial position. As the Bears gear up for the upcoming season, fans can expect to see Walker making an impact on defense and contributing to the team’s success.
