Reports suggest that Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel is interested in signing Mason Mount from his former club, Chelsea, during the summer transfer window. The 24-year-old midfielder is likely to leave Chelsea after talks between his representatives and the club hit a wall over a contract extension. The Blues may be forced into selling Mount this summer to avoid breaking Financial Fair Play rules. Mount’s current deal at Stamford Bridge is due to expire in the summer of 2024, and Liverpool is also strongly linked with a transfer. However, Tuchel wants to bring the England international to the Bundesliga, as he had a strong relationship with Mount during his time at Chelsea, where the pair won the Champions League together.
Chelsea originally wanted to offer Mount a seven-year deal that would keep him at the club until 2030, but the terms were nowhere close to what he was demanding. Following news of their huge financial losses, the Blues may now decide to sell Mount to avoid an FFP breach. It is believed that the club is looking for at least £50m for Mount, who has been voted Chelsea’s Player of the Year for the last two campaigns. Mount has made a total of 192 appearances for Chelsea to date, registering 33 goals and 37 assists. He has 36 caps for England and is highly rated by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.
John Barnes recently claimed that Mount has the “profile of a Liverpool player” and urged the Reds to bring him to Anfield. The Liverpool legend told BonusCodeBets: “I think Mason Mount would fit in with what we want. If you look at his strength as a midfield player – he attacks, he defends, he’s dynamic, he’s direct, he gets up and down. This is the profile of a Liverpool player. He could fit in with what we want… I would welcome that signing if he were to come to Liverpool.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Paul Merson is baffled by Chelsea’s transfer decision, calling it “bad business.” The Blues are targeting an ex-Manchester United star as Mount’s replacement, which Merson believes is a mistake. He said, “I think it’s bad business. I really do. I think they’ve got a top player there in Mason Mount. I think he’s going to be a top player for the next 10 years. I don’t think they need to go and buy someone else.”
Mount’s potential departure from Chelsea could be a significant loss for the club, as he has been a key player for them over the last few seasons. However, if the Blues are forced to sell him to avoid an FFP breach, they may have no choice but to let him go. It remains to be seen whether Tuchel can convince Mount to join him at Bayern Munich or whether Liverpool will make a move for the midfielder.
