Barcelona President Confirms Midfield Signing Target in January
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that the club is actively pursuing a midfield signing in the upcoming January transfer window. However, their ability to make the signing depends on improving their salary cap situation.
The Catalan side has been facing a shortage in midfield since Gavi suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in November. Additionally, they need to register Brazilian forward Vitor Roque within La Liga’s squad-cost limit.
Barcelona has faced difficulties in registering players within La Liga’s limits in recent years. For instance, summer signing Inigo Martinez was only registered in September. Laporta expressed his desire to add another midfielder to compensate for Gavi’s injury, preferably through a loan deal until the end of the season, similar to the one they had with Edgar Davids in 2005.
The club has until the end of the year to improve their salary limit through ongoing deals. If successful, they will be in contention to bring in a new midfielder. Laporta also discussed the situation of loanees Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo, expressing interest in making them permanent members of the club.
In other news, Barcelona has been facing a problem due to Robert Lewandowski’s recent form. The 35-year-old striker has struggled to find the back of the net, scoring only eight times in La Liga this season. His efficiency and spark in front of goal have significantly declined, and he has been displaying frustration and complaining on the pitch when the ball is not passed to him.
Lewandowski’s erratic ball control and lack of contribution to the team’s pressing have further added to Barcelona’s woes. As a result, the club has decided to bring in Brazilian striker Vitor Roque during the winter transfer window.
La Liga rules allow teams to sign another player when a squad member is injured for four months or more. Barcelona plans to utilize this opportunity by signing Roque, despite the need for a midfielder. This decision highlights the severity of Barcelona’s goalscoring problem.
