Barcelona have expressed interest in signing Jorginho from Chelsea but Graham Potter could intervene to keep the midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

La Liga giants Barca are keeping tabs on Jorginho’s contract situation with a view of signing him during the January transfer window, according to The Sun.

Jorginho, 30, is closing in on 200 appearances for Chelsea, having arrived in the Premier League from Napoli in 2018.

The World Cup winner has won the Champions League and Europa League during his spell at Chelsea and continues to be a key member of the squad in west London.

But Jorginho has entered the final year of his contract and Barcelona could agree a pre-contract with the midfielder in January and sign him on a free transfer.

It is claimed that Jorginho is viewed as a possible replacement for Nou Camp hero Sergio Busquets, who has made 685 appearances for Barca since 2008.

Jorginho played 90 minutes of Potter’s first game in charge of Chelsea as the Blues drew 1-1 with Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League.

It remains to be seen whether Potter views Jorginho as one of his influential players going forward. If so, the former Brighton boss may put pressure on Chelsea to hand him a new contract and block a move to Barcelona, who signed Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso from Chelsea over the summer.

Jorginho became the first Chelsea player to speak out following Thomas Tuchel’s sacking and Potter’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.

‘A lot has happened as everyone knows,’ he said last week. ‘We are excited to work with [Graham Potter] and his staff.

‘It’s been good the first few days. We had a great, great time with Thomas [Tuchel] and we appreciate everything he did for us and for the club.

‘It was a surprise for us. There is always talking about what happened but now we have games coming and life is quick, so we don’t have much time to stay there thinking

‘We talk and then we need to concentrate on what we do.’

Asked if Potter needed to help rebuild confidence in the Chelsea squad, Jorginho added: ‘It was Thomas Tuchel’s feeling [that there was a lack of confidence] at that moment and he said that to us as well.

‘We tried what we could to do our best. Unfortunately, it wasn’t working anymore.’
