Barcelona’s Search for Xavi’s Successor: Why Arteta is Not in the Running
Barcelona have been on the lookout for a new manager to replace the departing Xavi, but recent reports suggest that Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta is no longer on their radar. The Spanish champions have also ruled out Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi as a potential candidate.
Xavi announced his decision to step down at the end of the season, but Barcelona president Joan Laporta has expressed his desire for the 44-year-old to stay on. However, it seems that Xavi is determined to stick with his original plan, despite Laporta’s attempts to persuade him otherwise.
Barcelona have narrowed down their list of potential replacements to include Luis Enrique, Hansi Flick, and Rafa Marquez. Arteta’s current contract with Arsenal until 2025 and his lack of experience are cited as reasons for the club’s decision to not pursue him.
Similarly, De Zerbi’s inexperience at major clubs and the hefty €15 million release clause in his deal with Brighton have also deterred Barcelona from considering him as a candidate. The club has also ruled out Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann for various reasons.
While Barcelona’s search for Xavi’s successor continues, it is clear that they are looking for a manager with a certain level of experience and pedigree. As the club navigates this transitional period, fans will be eagerly awaiting news of who will take the helm next.
