Kalvin Phillips Attracting Interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid
Kalvin Phillips, the Manchester City midfielder, is reportedly drawing attention from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as he considers his options for leaving the club. Several European clubs have expressed interest in signing Phillips, who is expected to depart City in January after falling out of favor with manager Pep Guardiola.
Phillips, a defensive midfielder, has only started two matches this season and is eager for regular game-time in order to secure a place in the England squad for Euro 2024. Initially, Newcastle and Juventus showed interest in the 28-year-old, but financial restrictions have made it unlikely for them to make a move.
Crystal Palace and West Ham are also keen on signing Phillips on loan, although City would prefer to offload him permanently. However, The Telegraph reports that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have now entered the race for his signature. A decision on Phillips’ future is expected to be made next week.
Barcelona is currently seeking a short-term replacement for the injured Gavi and had been offered the chance to sign Jordan Henderson prior to his move to Ajax. Despite reports of City’s demands for a potential deal deterring interested parties, the club remains relaxed about Phillips’ situation.
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson expressed interest in bringing Phillips to Selhurst Park but admitted that a permanent transfer may be beyond their financial means. However, a loan move could provide Phillips with the opportunity for regular Premier League football leading up to an important summer for England.
