Barcelona were unable to extend their lead at the top of La Liga as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Girona. Robert Lewandowski had the best chance of the game for the hosts, but his effort went over the bar in the fourth minute. Girona keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, on loan from Fulham, made a number of good saves to deny Barcelona, including one from Raphinha at his near post. Taty Castellanos also had a chance to score for the visitors, but his shot went wide.

Despite the disappointment of not winning, Xavi’s side still increased their advantage over Real Madrid to 13 points after their title rivals were beaten by Villarreal on Sunday. Barcelona lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with ter Stegen in goal, Koundé, Araújo, García and Balde in defence, Gavi and Busquets in midfield and Roberto, Raphinha and Lewandowski up front. Kessié replaced Roberto at half-time, while Alba and F Torres came on for Raphinha and Ansu Fati respectively in the second half.

Girona set up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Gazzaniga in goal, Martinez, Bueno, López and Hernández Cabrera in defence, Romeu in midfield and Tsygankov, Martín, García, Villa Suárez and Castellanos up front. Riquelme replaced Tsygankov in the 71st minute, Fernández came on for Martín in the 85th minute and Stuani and Couto replaced Villa Suárez and Castellanos respectively in the 60th minute. The referee for the match was Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz and 78,425 people were in attendance.
