Rene Neelissen, a Dutch businessman and owner of AZ Alkmaar, is reportedly interested in purchasing an English football club, with Huddersfield being his primary target. Neelissen’s club has hired middlemen to assist in the acquisition process, as they conduct their due diligence and work out the details of a potentially complicated deal.
Huddersfield, who are currently looking for new owners, have struggled to find a buyer willing to meet their asking price, despite several interested parties. An American group, advised by well-known English deal-maker Gary Mellor, has also expressed interest in purchasing the club.
However, there is a possibility that Huddersfield could fall into administration, which would result in a 12-point penalty this season and likely relegate them from the Championship. The club is currently 23rd in the league and six points off safety, with new boss Neil Warnock struggling to steer them away from the drop zone.
Neelissen’s AZ Alkmaar has been performing well under his ownership, with an impressive Conference League win against Lazio in Italy last week. The Dutch businessman is now looking for another project across the North Sea and sees Huddersfield as a potential opportunity.
It remains to be seen whether Neelissen or the American group will ultimately purchase Huddersfield, but the club’s future is uncertain as they continue to search for new owners.
