Atletico Madrid’s Interest in Mason Greenwood: Will He Stay in Spain?
Atletico Madrid has shown interest in signing Mason Greenwood this summer, but they are hesitant to meet Manchester United’s high asking price for the striker. Greenwood, 22, made a move to Getafe on a season-long loan deal last summer and has not played for United since his arrest in January 2022. Despite all charges being dropped in February, United faced backlash over considering reintegrating him into the squad, leading to his move to Spain.
While Atletico Madrid admires Greenwood and is interested in signing him permanently, they find United’s asking price of £51.3 million (€60m) to be outrageous. United’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has not ruled out Greenwood’s return to the club, but officials have been exploring interest in Spain for a potential sale.
In recent talks with Barcelona, it was confirmed that the Catalan giants are interested in Greenwood but find his valuation to be out of their reach. Greenwood has had a successful season at Getafe, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 27 appearances. Getafe is eager to keep him for another season and is open to another loan deal.
United seems focused on selling Greenwood if they believe he has no future in Manchester. Ratcliffe emphasized the importance of considering the club’s values and making a fair judgment before making a decision about Greenwood’s future. As of now, it remains uncertain whether Greenwood will stay in Spain or return to Manchester United.
