Atletico Madrid fans launch Cristiano Ronaldo protest amid transfer links with former Real Madrid star as Manchester United warned he cannot be replaced

Cristiano Ronaldo’s links to Atletico Madrid have provoked a strong reaction.

Ronaldo informed Manchester United that he wished to leave this summer and Champions League football was key to his destination.

His list of potential destinations is diminishing, though, as the likes to Chelsea and Bayern Munich have ruled themselves out of the race.

Reports over the weekend claimed that Atletico were stepping up their pursuit of the 37-year-old and were willing to put Antoine Griezmann on the transfer market.

United are claimed to be willing to sanction a loan move, but only if he agreed to an extension.

Atletico Madrid fans launched an online protest against signing Ronaldo from United.

He played for their rivals Real Madrid between 2009 and 2018 and left a club legend after winning four Champions League titles – and scoring 450 goals in just 438 games.

Fans started using #ContraCR7 [AgainstCR7] on Twitter in protest against the proposed move.

Ronaldo has been a menace to Atletico over the course of his career.

He has played against them more than any other team and has 25 goals in 35 games, including four hat tricks.

He was crucial to Real’s Champions League final wins over Atletico, in 2014 and 2016, scoring in the former and netting the decisive shootout penalty in the latter.

Manchester United fans have been split on whether Ronaldo should stay or go.

Erik ten Hag has insisted he wants the Portugal superstar to be part of his plans this season.

So far, Ronaldo has not featured in pre-season after being given time off for family reasons.

Doubts remain over whether he will return in time for the start of the Premier League season next week.

The United Stand presenter Mark Goldbridge told talkSPORT that it would be nearly impossible to replace him.

He said: “I don’t think you can replace Ronaldo. You really are talking about people like Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski and those players have already moved.

“I will repeat what I said. Erik ten Hag doesn’t want to lose Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s been very public about that.

“It baffles me when United fans start saying ‘we are better off without him’.

“That’s a great opinion and welcome to the world of having that. Hold that opinion and cherish it, but the manager is planning for him.

“I want our manager to, like any other manager or any other clubs, be backed and have what they want.”
