Aston Villa Star Moussa Diaby Set to Join Al-Ittihad in €60m Deal

Date:

Aston Villa’s record signing, Moussa Diaby, is on the verge of joining Al-Ittihad in a deal worth approximately €60 million. The 25-year-old forward has agreed to personal terms and a long-term contract with the Saudi Pro League club. This move comes just a year after Diaby joined Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth around €40 million.

Diaby had an impressive debut season at Villa, making 54 appearances in all competitions and contributing 10 goals and nine assists. He played a crucial role in helping the club secure qualification for the Champions League for the first time in over four decades. His performances caught the attention of Al-Ittihad, who were also linked with him last summer before his move to Villa.

The interest from Al-Ittihad is not surprising considering the club’s recent investment in overseas talent. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) took control of four teams in the Saudi Pro League last summer, including Al-Ittihad. This has led to an influx of high-profile signings, such as Karim Benzema from Real Madrid, N’Golo Kante from Chelsea, and Fabinho from Liverpool.

Moreover, there have been recent changes in the coaching staff at Al-Ittihad. Former Inter Milan manager Stefano Pioli is reportedly set to be appointed as the club’s new head coach, replacing Marcelo Gallardo. These developments suggest that Al-Ittihad is actively working towards strengthening their squad and challenging for titles in the upcoming seasons.

While Diaby’s move to Al-Ittihad may come as a surprise to some Villa fans, it could be a beneficial move for all parties involved. The substantial transfer fee will provide Villa with additional funds to reinvest in their squad ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The club has already made several signings, including Ian Maatsen, Samuel Iling-Junior, Lewis Dobbin, Enzo Barrenechea, and Ross Barkley. Additionally, some players, such as Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam, Omari Kellyman, and Morgan Sanson, have departed.

As for Diaby, the move to Saudi Arabia offers him the opportunity to further develop his career in a league that has seen a significant rise in competitiveness and quality. The Saudi Pro League’s association with high-profile signings and the presence of top-tier managers like Pioli adds to its allure. Diaby’s skills and versatility make him a valuable asset for any team, and he could play a crucial role in Al-Ittihad’s quest for success.

Overall, while the departure of Moussa Diaby may be a loss for Aston Villa, it presents an opportunity for the club to strengthen their squad and continue their upward trajectory. As for Diaby, the move to Al-Ittihad could prove to be a stepping stone in his career, allowing him to showcase his talents in a rapidly growing league.
