He may be just four years into his managerial career but Steven Gerrard has already developed a reputation for saying exactly how he feels.

And his latest honest comments came after his Aston Villa side’s 2-1 defeat to former club Liverpool on Tuesday – and it was referee Jon Moss on the receiving end of the truth bomb.

The hosts were on the end of numerous controversial decisions at Villa Park, which led to the referee getting booed off the pitch by the supporters at full time.

They clearly felt that small decisions such as free-kicks, goal-kicks, and throw-ins were consistently going against them and in favour of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Gerrard seemed to agree and, when asked about Moss’ performance during their defeat, he said: “No comment, I just hope that it’s looked at, that’s all I’ll say.

Pressed again, he added: “I don’t want to get into trouble and I don’t want to be sour. We’ve lost the game, Liverpool have scored two goals against us, we need to look at that.

“I don’t want to try and cover over any cracks, but I was asked a question and I said that I hope the referee’s performance is looked at.”

One reporter then told Gerrard that Moss would be retiring at the end of the season, to which he replied: “Is he? Good!”

Moss will follow Mike Dean and Martin Atkinson into retirement at the end of the current campaign, before starting his new role with the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited).

So, unfortunately for Gerrard, Moss hasn’t gone for good just yet.
