Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus suffers hamstring injury in Champions League win over Sevilla

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Gabriel Jesus suffered a hamstring injury in the Gunners’ 2-1 victory over Sevilla on Tuesday in the Champions League.

The north Londoners lost their last outing in the competition away to Lens but reclaimed top spot in Group B with a hard-fought victory in Seville, with Jesus playing a starring role.

Jesus’ Impact

Arsenal opened the scoring in stoppage time of the first half when the Brazilian pulled off an audacious turn before playing in compatriot Gabriel Martinelli for a one-v-one, with the winger rounding Orjan Nyland and rolling the ball into an empty net.

Not long after the restart Jesus doubled the visitors’ lead, cutting inside and rifling a ferocious curling effort into the top corner.

Jesus Forced Off

Arsenal were pegged back from a corner just before the hour-mark and had to withstand considerable pressure in the closing stages, but managed to cling on to all three points.

After showcasing his flair and invention, Jesus worked tirelessly to defend from the front in the latter stages but went down clutching his hamstring after a duel late in the match.

The challenge looked relatively innocuous but after receiving some treatment from the physio he motioned that he had to come off and limped to the sideline.

Arteta’s Reaction

Although there is cautious optimism that the injury is not too serious, Arteta feels it is a bad sign that Jesus was unable to continue and says he will need to be assessed in the coming days.

Asked if Jesus’ substitution was just a precaution, Arteta told TNT Sports: ‘No, he felt something in his hamstring, so let’s see.’ Probed on whether the injury will now need to be assessed, he added: ‘Well he asked straight away to be subbed, which is not good news because Gabi is not a player who does that at all. So we have to wait and see in the next few days.’

Arsenal play Sheffield United at the Emirates on Saturday and Jesus is now a doubt for that match, though Arteta was thrilled with his impact against Sevilla: ‘You need magic moments in these games and you need the big players to step in and create those moments.’

In his post-match press conference, he added: ‘Big games are for big players. He needed to produce those moments to win in a stadium like this. He’s done it for us in a really big way. Then, really sad because he felt something in his hamstring and I’m worried about that.’

Arteta’s Praise for Team Performance

On the team’s performance, he added: ‘I’m very happy to win here. There are not many teams have won here in the last 10 years in Europe and we’ve done it.

‘I really liked the team, especially the first 60,65 minutes because we played the game we wanted. After we went two-nil up we should have scored a third one and we had openings to score it and we didn’t.

‘In one corner, the first action where they had something they scored and from there, they have experience, they have a lot of people and a lot of belief they can get in the game.’
