Arsenal’s Champions League Hopes Limited to Just Two Teams, According to Rio Ferdinand
Arsenal’s return to the Champions League after a seven-year hiatus has been met with cautious optimism. However, according to Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, the Gunners have “nothing to fear” outside of Manchester City and Real Madrid in this season’s competition.
Last season, Arsenal secured a second-placed finish in the Premier League behind Pep Guardiola’s dominant Manchester City side, earning them a spot in Europe’s premier competition. They began their campaign in impressive fashion, scoring four goals against PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates Stadium. However, they suffered a setback in their away match against Lens.
Despite this setback, Arsenal won three and drew one of their remaining matches to top Group B and secure a place in the knockout phase. Now, they face Porto in the first leg of an intriguing last-16 tie.
The timing of this clash seems perfect for Arsenal, as they are currently in excellent form. The club has won five consecutive games in the league before their trip to Portugal.
Ferdinand believes that Arsenal has the potential to go far in the tournament, as long as they avoid facing Manchester City and Real Madrid until the later stages. He stated, “As long as they stay away from Man City and Real Madrid until maybe the semis or finals, I think they can get that far. They’ve got nothing to fear outside those two.”
The former United and England defender also highlighted the threat posed by Arsenal’s creative players, such as Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli. When these players are fit and firing, Ferdinand believes they can define a match and pose a threat to any opponent.
In terms of injuries, Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira were pictured in first-team training on Tuesday after returning from injury. However, it remains to be seen whether they will be included in the squad for the Porto match. On the other hand, Gabriel Jesus, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Oleksandr Zinchenko were not seen during the training session, indicating that they may be unavailable due to injury.
With their current form and the potential impact of their key players, Arsenal will be hoping to secure a positive result in their first leg clash against Porto. The aim will be to gain an advantage that they can take into the second leg of the round of 16 tie on March 12.
As Arsenal’s Champions League journey continues, fans will be eagerly watching to see if they can live up to Ferdinand’s expectations and go far in the competition. With their recent performances and talented squad, there is certainly reason for optimism.
