Marquinhos’ Loan Move to Nantes Could End Early in January
Marquinhos, the forgotten Arsenal star, may see his loan spell at FC Nantes cut short in January. The 20-year-old winger was loaned out to the French club during the summer transfer window after struggling to make an impact in north London.
Since joining Ligue 1, Marquinhos has faced difficulties, with a lack of form affecting his playing time. He has only featured seven times in the league this season, starting just once. French outlet L’Équipe has reported that his loan may be terminated early, despite the contract running until the end of the season. The lack of playing time is cited as one of the potential reasons for this decision.
Marquinhos has failed to score and has provided only one assist so far this season. He is eager to participate in the South America pre-Olympic tournament from January 20 to February 11, which Nantes opposes. This disagreement is also contributing to the possibility of ending his loan spell prematurely.
If Marquinhos were to return to Arsenal, it is unlikely that he would be of use to Mikel Arteta, as the Gunners have already sent him out on loan before. Additionally, Arsenal already has talented players in his position, such as Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and a resurging Kai Havertz.
Marquinhos made six appearances for Arsenal’s first team, scoring a goal and providing an assist on his debut in 2022 against FC Zurich in the Europa League. However, he struggled to secure a regular starting spot and played only one minute in the Premier League. In the second half of last season, he was loaned out to Championship side Norwich, where he made just 11 appearances.
Before his move to England, Marquinhos spent his entire career at Brazilian club Sao Paulo, playing 42 matches for his boyhood club. He won the Campeonato Paulista with Sao Paulo in 2021 and the Pan American Games with Brazil U23s last year.
In conclusion, Marquinhos’ loan move to Nantes could be cut short in January due to a lack of playing time and his desire to participate in a tournament. Returning to Arsenal may not be a viable option for him, considering the club’s existing talent in his position.
