Thierry Henry: William Saliba is the Best Defender in the Premier League

AC Milan v Paris Saint-Germain: Group F - UEFA Champions League 2023/24

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has declared that William Saliba is currently the best defender in the Premier League. Saliba, who joined Arsenal three years ago, has been instrumental in the team’s success since making his debut last season. Under manager Mikel Arteta, Saliba’s style of play perfectly suits the team’s defensive strategy.

In the 2023/24 season, Saliba has continued to impress, contributing to Arsenal’s best defensive record in the league. The team has only conceded 11 goals in 14 games. While many consider him one of the top defenders in the Premier League, Henry believes that Saliba is unrivaled in his position.

Henry praised Saliba’s ability to defend one-on-one and his contribution to Arsenal’s high defensive line. He also highlighted Saliba’s speed and recovery skills, as well as his willingness to retain possession and distribute the ball to his teammates.

Brentford FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League

Henry expressed surprise that Arsenal initially sent Saliba on loan to Marseille in the 2021/22 season, as he believed Saliba was already better than the team’s existing defenders. However, Saliba’s loan spell proved his worth, and he returned to Arsenal as a standout player.

Saliba’s contributions have helped Arsenal secure the top spot in the league, with a two-point lead ahead of their upcoming match against Luton Town. Henry believes that Arsenal’s experience from last season’s title challenge collapse has made the team stronger and better equipped to win the league this time.

According to Henry, the unity in Arsenal’s defensive approach is crucial for their success. While scoring goals is important, maintaining a solid defensive unit and minimizing goals conceded is equally vital.
