Arsenal Break British Transfer Record with Signing of Declan Rice
Arsenal Football Club has officially announced the signing of midfielder Declan Rice in a club-record deal worth £105 million. The 24-year-old has joined the Gunners from West Ham United, signing a long-term contract with the club.
Manager Mikel Arteta had identified Rice as his top transfer target for the summer window, and despite initial frustrations, Arsenal was able to secure the deal. The Gunners faced competition from Manchester City for Rice’s signature but ultimately emerged as the victors.
The transfer fee of £105 million makes Rice the most expensive British player in history, surpassing the previous record set by Jack Grealish when he joined Manchester City for £100 million two years ago. Additionally, the deal breaks Arsenal’s own club-record transfer fee, previously held by Nicolas Pepe’s £72 million move from Lille in 2019.
Rice, who began his career as a center-back, has excelled since transitioning to midfield. Known for his outstanding defensive instincts and work rate, he has also added creativity and composure on the ball to his game. Last season, he scored four goals in the Premier League and led West Ham to their first major trophy in 43 years when they won the Europa Conference League.
The England international has been a mainstay in Gareth Southgate’s national team, making 43 appearances to date. His preference to stay in London and join Arsenal was evident throughout the transfer negotiations, despite interest from Manchester City.
With Rice’s arrival, Arsenal’s midfield is set to receive a significant boost. The Gunners have already secured a £65 million deal for Kai Havertz from Chelsea, with Arteta indicating that he sees the German as more of a midfielder than an attacker. However, the departure of Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka means Arsenal may still be in the market for another midfielder.
In addition to Rice and Havertz, Arsenal has also confirmed the signing of versatile defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax for £40 million. The club’s spending spree is expected to continue, with the Gunners looking to bring in Southampton’s Romeo Lavia as another new midfielder and provide cover for Bukayo Saka, who played 62 games for club and country last season.
The signing of Rice demonstrates Arsenal’s ambition to strengthen their squad and compete at the highest level. The Gunners are determined to challenge for major honors and return to the top of English football.
