Arsenal Confirm Release of 13 Players Ahead of 2023/24 Season

Arsenal Football Club has announced the release of 13 players ahead of the 2023/24 season. The club released details of its retained list on Friday, which includes some familiar names leaving the club alongside a host of academy stars. The departures give Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta a clearer picture over which players he will have at his disposal ahead of next season.

Familiar Names Leaving the Club

FA Cup winner Matt Smith will leave the Emirates Stadium when his contract expires later this month. Smith, a former youth captain, was named as an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Chelsea in the 2020 final at Wembley. He will be joined by Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Zach Awe, Joel Ideho, George Lewis and Tom Smith, who will all be in search of new surroundings this summer. Reiss Nelson – who has caught the attention of AC Milan – is also out of contract this month but is currently locked in negotiations with the club over a new deal.

Academy Stars Exiting the Club

Four of the club’s academy stars will not have their contracts renewed ahead of the new season. Kaleel Green, Alexandar Kovacevic, Tino Quamina and Mathaeus Roberts have been deemed surplus to requirements and will exit the club on June 30.

WSL Side Releases Players

Arsenal’s WSL side have also released a number of players with Mana Iwabuchi, Rafaelle Souza and Fran Stenson all departing. The club thanked the outgoing talents for their service, writing: “We thank all the above players for their contributions to the club during their time with us. You will always be part of the Arsenal Family and we wish you all the best of health, happiness and success in your futures.”

Looking Ahead to Next Season

The departures give Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta a clearer picture over which players he will have at his disposal ahead of next season. The Gunners are plotting to go one better next term after pushing Manchester City all the way in their pursuit of the Premier League title. Arsenal ended the season five-points adrift of City after a titanic battle for top spot. But Arteta will already be looking at how his side can dethrone the Treble winners. The Gunners kick off the new season at home to Nottingham Forest before back-to-back London derbies against Crystal Palace and Fulham.
